Save, Spend and Share

Save, Spend and Share

The kids are back in school, but that doesn’t mean they can’t also learn while they’re at home, too! A lot of times, kids don’t learn very much about money during school, so it’s a good idea to help them understand about budgeting and saving at home. It’s never too early for them to start learning, either.

If you’re looking for ways to teach your kids about money, we have a great financial craft for you! This craft is fun, engaging, and really easy.

You’ll need:

  • 3 jars or 3 Tupperware containers per child (get creative here; you could even use empty tissue boxes!)
  • labels
  • markers
  • stickers, scrapbook paper, etc.

Separate the 3 containers and label each with either SaveSpend, or Share. Then let your child decorate them with fun stickers of their choosing. If you have older children, they could even glue scrapbook paper to their containers to help make it even more eye-catching. The sky is the limit, as far as decorating goes! The more your child gets into it and has fun, the more likely they will be to use the containers long after crafting time is over.

During the craft be sure to explain each jar’s purpose. The child will have to split up their money between saving it, spending it, or sharing it. Explain why saving is a good idea in case of emergencies or for future needs. Explain why spending money needs a goal in order to stay within a budget. Explain what sharing their money can mean to other people. For example, donating money to a charity can help many people in need. Help them decide what would be best for their money. You’ll always want goals with your money and make sure to help them set those goals.

A great thing about this craft is that it’s super simple and doesn’t take long! It’s the perfect after-school or after-dinner activity, and it’s a great lesson for children to learn. Be sure to encourage them to keep using their jars months after they’ve made them, and let us know how your crafting time went! You can post photos of your creations on our Facebook page. We’d love to see them!
